It is wise to moderate your behaviour in public. While holding hands and kissing on the cheek is acceptable, more passionate displays of affection can result in fines and even arrests.

While it is still important to respect Islamic culture and dress appropiately, western women are free to dress as they please. They are not required to wear a veil, nor to cover their shoulders in public.

Strictly speaking it is illegal for an unmarried couple to share a hotel room. However very few establishments will actually ask to see a marriage certificate - particularly if you're a Western couple.

There are huge number of restaurants and bars serving alcohol - the only restriction is that they must be located within the confines of a hotel or sporting stadium. According to the letter of the law, everyone drinking in the bar should be a guest of that hotel, but this is never enforced, which means people are free to drink where they choose. Residents are free to drink in their own homes, providing they own a booze licence issued by the municipality.
There are two alcohaol distributors, African Eastern and MMI, who import alcohol and distribute it to bars and sell it through their own shops to licence holders.
Tourists are free to bring limited amounts of alcohol into the country from the duty-free shop at the airport. It is illegal to drink in the streets or in public places. |
