Grand Mosque
Grand Mosque

The Grand Mosque in Bur Dubai is home to the city's tallest minaret. It might appear to be a beautiful example of restoration work, but was in fact built in the 1990s in the style of the Grand Mosque, which dated from 1900 but was knocked down to make way for another mosque in 1960. Ah, the perils of progress, always perceived to late. But the new Grand Mosque's sand-colored walls and wooden shutters blend perfectly with the surrounding old quarter of Bur Dubai.

Clock Tower
Clock Tower

The Clock Tower has long been one of the most distingushable features of the city, perhaps second only to the Dubai World Trade Centre. Situated on a roundabout that directs traffic to all parts of the city, the Clock Tower is a collusion of modern and traditional architecture.

Bastakia
Bastakia

One of the Dubai's most picturesque heritage sights, Bastakia is being carefully renovated and turned into a pedestrianised conservation area. The name Bastakia comes from the first people to settle the area, who were traders from Bastak in southern Iran.

Stepping into the narrow alleyways of Bastakia is to walk into Dubai's past. Many buildings sport traditional wind towers, a surprisingly efficient fromof natural air-conditioning that was designed to capture the breeze and funnel the cooler air into the rooms below.

Dubai Zoo 04 3444161
Dubai Zoo

Dubai Zoo is the oldest zoo of its kind not only in the United Arab Emirates but also in the Arabian Peninsula. Dubai Zoo also happens to be the first Arabian zoo to breed the rare Chimpanzee and Arabian wild cat.

It is a special place of interest and fun for tourists and the people of Dubai.

During the first couple of years of its existance, the Dubai Zoo housed only a few animals like the big cats, monkeys and hoofed-animals. There was also a small acquarium with some fishes and reptiles.

In 1971 the management of the Dubai Zoo was taken over by the Dubai Municipality.

From May 1986 to May 1989, a part of the Zoo was redesigned and rebuilt. From June 1989 to the present there is constant re-designing and renovation.

Jumeirah Mosque
Jumeirah Mosque

The city has many fine mosques. One of the largest and most beautiful — Jumeirah Mosque — is a spectacular example of modern Islamic architecture.

Built of stone in medieval Fatimid tradition, the mosque with its twin minarets and majestic dome is a city landmark. It is particularly attractive at night when subtle lighting throws its artistry into relief.

The elaborate Jumeirah Mosque is Dubai's most admired mosque from the outside and one of Dubai’s most photographed sights.

A.Dubai in General
A.Dubai in General

Dubai sits on the Arabian Gulf, which is key to the city's tourism success today and has been a source of both food and trade for centuries.

Historically Dubai was two settlements built on either side of the creek, a 15 kilometre (9.5mile) inlet around which the city's trade developed. Deira is a catch-all term for the area to the north of the Creek, and Bur Dubai refers to the south.

The terms 'Deira side' and 'Bur Dubai side' are still used to differentiate between the areas north and south of the creek.

A little further along the coast, Bur Dubai merges with Jumeirah, where residential, retail and tourist development streches for some 15 kilometres southwards.

When petrodollars began to flow into the emirate in the 1960s, Deira and Bur Dubai developed rapidly, the former becoming, the trade centre and the later the residential area. Today, however all the major developments in the city are taking place on the Bur Dubai side, with projects such as Knowledge village, Media city springing up alongside Sheikh Zayed Road.

Getting around : Taxis are the best way of getting around.Drivers are generally courteous and knowledgeable. All taxis have meters. A growing number of taxis accept credit cards. Public bus service is other option. There are plans for a rail system.

See Here : Unspecified beaches, wadis and water holes easily explored in a day. While dune bashing requires a masterful hand, those not yet skilled can run to nearby any local tour operator for a 4x4 safari with barbecue and belly dancing thrown in for good measures.
