This German shoemaker was once as plain and unglamorous as... a German shoemaker. But then German model Heidi Klum -who makes shoes in her spare time -designed some footwear for them and suddenly the glamour was there. Everyone wanted a pair of 'Birks' and the shoes that were traditionally worn by vegetarians, beardy- liberals and ironic Generation Xer's were now in demand from the fashions set. So much so, the London store sold out in days and pairs of 'Birks' were going for inflated prices on eBay. The fuss has now died down but the shoes are as good as ever. If you're a man with feet bigger than a size eight, the work shoes will make you look like Herman Munster on his first day at the office, but the sandals and casual wear are Germanic in a sensible-but-likable way.

Khalid Javed, owner of Al-Fareed Shoes, is a famed master shoemaker. Nowadays his tiny shop is more concerned with repairs, but hanging in the windows are exquisite, soft-leather, gold or silver embroidered slipper shoes. Each pair is uniquely decorated and if your size is not available he'll happily make you up a bespoke pair within 24 hours. Best of all, it'll set you back a mere Dhs30.

The Time Out team are huge fans of Dune, which offers affordable copies of designer looks as soon as they've stepped off the catwalk. High heeled courts, slinky slingbacks and strappy sandals are typical styles but there is also a selection of flats, wedges and boots. Characteristic touches include girlie details such as corsages and beading, and prices -while not cheap -are surprisingly reasonable given the quality.

This quirky store has found its own niche between beach clothing and the high-end work-wear of the shops that surround it in Ibn Battuta. The candy-striped jackets and flirty skirts blend sportswear, contemporary cruise-wear and school uniforms, creating fun and flattering office outfits. And for nights out these can be combined with one from their array of T-shirts daubed with star signs, names of foreign locations or famous athletes.The store also stocks cute, embroiderec Chinese-style pumps and sports shoes by trendy UK brand Acupuncture.

The fave footwear of the Sex And The City set has a branch in Dubai's swanky Emirates Towers shopping emporium. Here you can load up on ornate sandals, strappy kittens

Despite the location of its namesake, this company is German and for years they have been selling top-of-the-line pens including their signature meisterstiick (German for masterpiece) range. The brand now sells watches, leather goods, jewellery,some great watches, wallets, desk accessories and even aftershave. The company has been bought out by Dunhill (who make equally excellent accessories) so a shopping trip here will ensure quality of the highest order but you'll have to bring stack of notes as high as Mont Blanc itself to ensure you walk out the shop with anything . other than a cheery 'please come again'.
